Joan Chen's directorial debut is a well-crafted tale of the Chinese Cultural Revolution. The photography of the countryside is effective in both displaying its beauty and conveying the loneliness of the title character. Stories of this era rarely have happy endings and Xiu Xiu: The Sent-Down Girl is no different. The story ends on a depressing but appropriate note.
