Lucky People Center International

"Dear, I heard about this trippy film playing at that theatre on Arbutus- what's it called again? So like it's done by these two Hungarian DJ's or something and like it's really trippy and should be fun and wanna go? If it gets boring, we can just talk about stuff we need to study for Psyche 101 on Tuesday. That test is going to be *really* hard, they're going to ask about the unit we just went over, and you know what a ditz I am- ha ha ha...."

Okay, so I'm not supposed to review the crowd. But I'm sure most of them had no idea what this was supposed to be about. They went back into their cars, turned on Z95 and talked about how weird some of that was.

This is "Baraka" done to a "Channel Zero" beat. It's frequently beautiful, the music is very well done, and the editing is supurb. One of the better ones of the fest. I think I would have liked it better if I hadn't first seen "Baraka" and those other two films that are impossible to spell, and if I wasn't a fan of "Channel Zero".

It touches on issues of 'the dance' around the world, and what awful things we're doing to it. Lots of eartymothery stuff. You could think of this as a more obvious "Baraka" with words, or as a more vague "Channel Zero" lasting 80 minutes.

(And if you don't know what either of those two things are, you owe it to yourself to find out)

The director was there, a Norwegian percussionist (not a DJ, as he pointed out). The film took 3 years to make, and they made a total of 100 hours of footage, on DV and super-16. The footage is being repurposed and remixed in typical sampling style, being shown at the concerts of 'Lucky People International', who apparently is a band from Norway. Go figure.

FYI: "Channel Zero" can be found at http://www.channelzero.com/ but you're on your own for "Baraka".

viff98 - another fine emit site.
