I Stand Alone [viff]
Dir: Gaspar Noé
Country: France

The last few minutes of this movie absolutely ruined it for me. After about an hour and a half of unnerving hatred and bitterness recited inside the main character's head, and the critical moment of grotesque violence, there's a touching moment where he confesses his weakness and his needs. In that moment, the butcher showed that he was just a man (a moral man) and he redeems himself and the movie.

The moment passes, and it seems he will continue to act out his perverse method of dealing with the world. Did these last few minutes make that much difference? Well, that added denouement negated what I thought was the whole point of the film. It changed it from a challenging and thoughtful study to a manipulative gimmick.
