Dance Me to My Song [imdb] [viff]
Dir: Rolf de Heer
Country: Australia

This was a very good film until the last two minutes happened.

This film, directed my Rolf de Heer (one of my favourite directors, and Austrailian too!) was co-written by and starred Heather Rose, a woman with cerebral palsy (CP for short- a condition where the brain works fine but the body doesn't work right). The story is quite well done, the acting is alright... but the ending. Yow... It seems tacked on, hurried, fake- it really doesn't fit with the rest of the movie, which is a well-directed, mostly well-written story from the point of view of the wheelchair.

This is one of the few films so far this year that have actually made me feel something inside. There were a few very touching scenes, and de Heer's light handed direction was perfect for the story. I have real problems with the ending, however- things happen too easily, too quickly. The rest of the film was very real, gritty and dramatic. Then there was this tacked-on happy ending that left me feeling like I'd just been robbed of a tasty treat just as it was getting good.

I really wish I could like this one more than I do...
