Who Are We?
Last year, a bunch of us started emailing each other reviews of some of the films we saw at viff97. I was talking with William a few nights ago, and hatched the idea of putting them up on a website. Alright! Being lazy, knowing what hell the upkeep of something like this would be, I set about to the task of writing a document management system. Cooool. Check the Colophon (below) for a list of the tools used. Concept to completion in four evenings. I'm rather proud of that. We're all film geeks to varying degrees. Some of us have actually been to film school (but are trying to forget the whole experience), and others just kinda like watching flashing pictures in a darkened room.
Right now, at the start of the fest, there are three of us. I'd like to get a few more by the end, so if you're interested in submitting some reviews, please go ahead. If it's good (not necessarily if we agree with it or not- that's not the point here), I'll post it and give you access to the easy automatic system.
Credits
Absolutely no thanks to the VIFF organisers for providing any of the data that appears on this site. I stole it off their website and spent about 4 hours massaging it into some kind of useful format. BBEdit and FileMaker Pro are Wonderful Things.
Absolutely no thanks to the VIFF organisers for providing free tickets or cheap passes for the reviewers. We're all paying our own ways, doing it for the love of movies. Or something.
Heaps of thanks to the awesome Internet Movie Database. I'm happy to give them this credit here, as requested: Filmography links courtesy of IMDb link-it programme. You go, girl.
Colophon
This site and its document flow system was created from scratch in four evenings, concept to completion, using the following tools on 'Froo Froo The Talking Cat', my Apple PowerMacintosh G3/300. Without the power of these tools, managing and creating this site in that short a time would have been really nasty:
- BBEdit (data massaging - love that grep - and some page creation)
- FileMaker Pro (data massaging)
- Frontier (workflow management, site automation)
- Fireworks (graphic creation)
- CyberStudio (page layout)
- Claris/FogCity eMailer (rest in peace - best email client ever. I'll use it until it breaks completely)
Home Internet connectivity through ADSL from BCTel.
Servers hosted by www.bitmovers.net. Thanks!
Music
A few CD's have been worn out in my CD player as background for creating this thing. Here are a few that I remember... they're linked to cdnow for ease of ordering. This is the only commercial part of the site. Go nuts.
- Tori Amos- From the Choirgirl Hotel
- Warren Zevon- Learning to Flinch
- DJ Shadow- Preemtive Strike
- Michael Penn- Free-For-All [out of circulation]
- Reeves Gabrels- Sacred Squall of Now
