Just a dotthe tall blond guy goes to japan

Strange Police

Nishi-Kagoshima

I'm typing today's entries here inside the waiting area of Nishi-Kagoshima station while waiting for my 23:30 train to Hakata, where I'll transfer to a shinkansen to Hiroshima.

Directly behind me are these two lovey-dovey high schoolers who are being openly affectionate in a most un-Japanese way. After not seeing any of this kind of thing for a month or so, I'm quite prudishly shocked. I wonder if I'll go into catatonic shock when I walk through my neighborhood back in Vancouver?

A few minutes ago, a policeman (with a gun!) walked through this room, paused in front of me, and kept walking. You see, I may be breaking the rules. I'm sitting near a plug in the wall, where I've plugged in my PowerBook to conserve battery power. I think he may have been wondering what I was up to, using their power like this. In any case, he walked right by, and I ignored him.

"Killing Me Softly (With His Song)" is currently on the PA system. If I had one Canadian Plus point for every time I heard that song here in Japan, I'd be able to fly home for free.

Odd little ISDN phone. They're everywhere.
Odd little ISDN phone. They're everywhere.

In a few minutes, I'm going to try using that bizarre ISDN/POTS phone to transfer a whole bunch of new pages and eMail. Wish me luck.

Hmm.. the cop just came back and asked to see my ticket. Perhaps I'd better do the rest of the typing later and just send what I've got before he starts thinking about kicking me out.

This might be a good time to mention that, while the town itself is more tourist-friendly than Tokyo, the people themselves seem to be a little less friendly. I hope I'm wrong on this one.
